If you would look at the illustrations, it may seem like liquid has the molecules that are closest together but actually, solids are solids because they are packed in such a way that they will not change their shape until you break off a portion of the item. Liquids tend to move around more freely because they can take the form of any container that they would be placed on.

Gases and Plasma are also known to move freely, even more so than liquids. They are also barely seen or felt, but their presence may be experienced based on the effect of the gases or Plasma to human beings.
