The process of making polymer is of many repeating units (poly means many), and the majority are composed of carbon. Or rather, carbon atoms bonded together into long chains called the backbone of the polymer. Many have just carbon and hydrogen. However, some polymers have no carbon.
Of those, nylons contain nitrogen atoms in the repeat unit backbone. Polyesters and polycarbonates contain oxygen in the spine. To make the chain, you would need many links or “-mers” then you must chemically be hooked or polymerized together.
