Two enlightenment thinkers from Europe influenced Thomas Jefferson. John Lock an English philosopher believed people had the right to life, liberty, and property. He also believed govt. is based on contract between the citizens and rulers. Govt. should respect rights of citizens and if didnt, the citizens had right to replace govt. The French thinker Baron Charles Montesquieu Baron Charles Montesquieu vwrote book The Spirit of Laws in 1748, which states the govt. should be divided into there groups: legislative, executive, and judicial power. Powers must be seperate to balance power. THese two men influenced Thomas Jefferson...........who in the declaration of independence said all citiens have the right of life, happiness, and the pursuitof happiness. Also, our govt. is separated into three branches which is inspired by Montesqueo
