- must be goal oriented. goals should be interpersonal. ex: those getting a divorce shouldnt focus on getting over the divorce, but on the here-and-now interpersonal issues. - pre-group sessions are crucial, because brief groups are less forgiving of inclusion mistakes- pre-group session should be used to help pt sharpen goals and reframe their problems to be suitable for group format- leader must be active and efficient, keep time, encourage transfer of skills to home environment asap, believe that the group will set change in motion but not complete the process, and use the briefness of the group to heighten awareness of the fact that responsibility lies within- brief gt isnt necessarily better than long-term gt. it is more beneficial for some groups than others.
