When a baby comes out bottom first, then it is considered to be a breech birth. Normally, the baby should come out head first. During the pregnancy, the baby should turn to a certain position or presentation. Sometimes, a fetus can’t move and this is why the birth is breeched. Breeched births are actually quite common and can be as high as half of the births in the main population.
Breeched births are higher when the mother has complications or disorders already including Fetal alcohol syndrome, congenital hydrocephalus and microcephalus. If a vaginal exam is being done on a pregnant woman and the nurse sees a footling breech presentation, then the nurse should apply a fetal heart monitor and make sure everything is okay.
Applying a fetal heart monitor is the correct action at this time. Answer D is incorrect because there is no need for an ultrasound based on the finding.
