Pneumonia is a disorder or virus that causes an infection in the lungs. The patient will suffer from coughing, pain in the chest, fever and breathing troubles. There are different levels of pneumonia. The causes of pneumonia can be diseases of the kidneys or liver, alcoholism and smoking to name a few.
However, children may get pneumonia too. Since there are a lot of strands of pneumonia, then there are different ways of transmitting it. It can become an outbreak and it can be transmitted through germs. Hand-to-hand contact is one way of transmitting this virus to someone else. Therefore, if a nurse is caring for a client who might develop pneumonia, it is important that the nurse to wash her or his hands frequently.
Using strict hand hygiene-rationale: the nurse should use strict hand hygiene to help minimize the clients exposure to infection, which could lead to pneumonia. the head of the bed should be kept at a minimum of 30 degrees. the client should be turned and repositioned at least every 2 hours to help promote secretion drainage. oral hygiene should be performed every 4 hours to help decrease the number of organisms in the clients mouth that could lead to pneumonia.client needs category: safe, effective care environmentclient needs subcategory: safety and infection controlcognitive level: analysisreference: smeltzer, s.c., et al. brunner & suddarths textbook of medical-surgical nursing, 11th ed. philadelphia: lippincott williams & wilkins, 2008, p. 635.
