Sickle cell anaemia is a disease concerning blood. The main problem involved in someone’s blood who has sickle cell anaemia is that their levels of oxygen in the haemoglobin of the red blood cells is not normal. What is known about sickle cell anaemia is that it is contracted mainly by heredity. There are other ways of contracting the disease. Swelling is a common symptom but it can lead to stroke.
Some people may not have issues with sickle cell anaemia but others may suffer more. What causes those who suffer more from sickle cell anaemia is illness, stress and poor hydration. When a couple are thinking about conceiving a child, there are certain couples who have a higher risk of conceiving a child with sickle cell anaemia . If the father is hba nd the mother is hbs, this is however the lowest risk.
If the father has normal hemoglobin (hba) and the mother has sickle cell anemia (hbs), the couple has a 0% chance of having a child with sickle cell anemia. If both parents have sickle cell anemia, the couple has a 100% chance of having a child with sickle cell anemia. If the father has sickle cell anemia and the mother has sickle cell trait (hbas), the couple has a 50% chance of having a child with sickle cell anemia. If both parents have sickle cell trait, the couple has a 25% chance of having a child with sickle cell anemia.
