Cardiac catheterization is when a catheter is put into part of the heart. This may be done because the vessels are blocked. This can either be done on the right part of the heart or the left part of the heart. This is a serious surgery.
Most surgeries are serious and make people nervous before undergoing the procedure. Even some surgeries that are done every day and are recognizable are still dangerous and there is a risk.
If a client is about to undergo this procedure and explains to the nurse that he is worried about having this procedure, the nurse must notify the physician. It may seem that this takes place frequently, but the doctor must still be notified and the medication should be withheld.
Withhold the medication and notify the physician immediately.-rationale: the nurse should withhold the medication and notify the physician that the client doesnt understand the procedure. the physician then has the obligation to explain the procedure better to the client and determine whether or not the client understands. if the client doesnt understand, he cant give a true informed consent. if the medication is administered before the physician explains the procedure, the sedation may interfere with the clients ability to clearly understand the procedure. the nurse may not just medicate the client and document her finding; she must notify the physician.client needs category: safe, effective care environmentclient needs subcategory: management of carecognitive level: analysisreference: craven, r.f., and hirnle, c.j. fundamentals of nursing: human health and function, 5th ed. philadelphia: lippincott williams & wilkins, 2007, p. 100.
