It is difficult to believe that someone can have too much water or take in too much water because we always hear about people who need to drink more water. Sometimes, this is known as water poisoning. This is dangerous because it affects the brain and how the brain functions due to the electrolytes being flushed out. Diabetes Insipidus is a problem when someone’s urine is too diluted.
This relates to the water intoxication because too much water is taken in or it just happens to have too much water in the body’s system. This would affect someone’s urination. If a patient is experiencing both water intoxication and diabetes insipidus, then he or she would feel confused during periods of the day as well as suffer from seizures.
Confusion and seizures-rationale: classic signs of water intoxication include confusion and seizures, both of which are caused by cerebral edema. weight gain will also occur. sunken eyeballs, thirst, and increased bun levels indicate fluid volume deficit. spasticity, flaccidity, and tetany are unrelated to water intoxication.client needs category: physiological integrityclient needs subcategory: reduction of risk potentialcognitive level: analysisreference: smeltzer, s.c., et al. brunner and suddarths textbook of medical surgical-nursing, 11th ed. philadelphia: lippincott williams & wilkins, 2008, p. 315.
