Addison’s disease is a condition that occurs because the adrenal cortex has already stopped functioning correctly. This means that the adrenal cortex may be sending hormones in too large or too small quantities. This can have an effect on the person’s overall system as a whole. In fact, a person with this disease has a higher risk of acquiring infection because of the weakened immune system.
Someone who is suffering from this disease may sometimes feel that they are very weak and they can barely do anything. A person suffering from this disease will not be able to retain a lot of fluid, will suffer from hyperthermia, and will not be able to prevent urine.
Risk for infection-rationale: addisons disease decreases the production of all adrenal hormones, compromising the bodys normal stress response and increasing the risk of infection. other appropriate nursing diagnoses for a client with addisons disease include deficient fluid volume and hyperthermia. urinary retention isnt appropriate because addisons disease causes polyuria.client needs category: physiological integrityclient needs subcategory: reduction of risk potentialcognitive level: applicationreference: smeltzer, s.c., et al. brunner and suddarths textbook of medical surgical-nursing, 11th ed. philadelphia: lippincott williams & wilkins, 2008, p. 1478.
