Kinetic energy is possessed by an object, by virtue of its movement. It is dependent upon mass and velocity. Potential energy is also affected by its position or state. However, it is more closely linked with forces such as the force of gravity.

While kinetic energy of an object is comparable to the state of other objects in its environment, potential energy is completely independent of its environment. Kinetic energy can be conveyed from one object to another. When kinetic energy accelerates, the body maintains unless it speeds up.

Energy, in physics, is the capacity for doing work. The kinetic energy of an object is the amount of energy it possesses due to its motion. Potential energy of an object is the amount of energy that is stored in it at rest. Even inanimate objects have potential energy due to gravitational pull.

If you are holding a glass, it has potential energy and if you drop it, it falls due to gravity, creating kinetic energy. The relationship between these two types of energy is motion.
