Nurses will give clients the wrong medication, but it most likely does not happen very often. It is unrealistic to think that nurses never make mistakes. They are human just like everyone else and everyone else makes mistakes.
However, it is always important when someone makes a mistake on the job to see what they do afterward. If they have a great procedure when a mistake is made and the nurse follows through with it, then that is the best thing.
If a nurse delivers the wrong medication to the client, then he or she will monitor the client for a short period of time. Then the nurse will assess the client and the nurse will complete an incident report. After the incident report, the nurse will provide a basis for promoting quality care and risk management.
The incident report will provide a basis for promoting quality care and risk management.-rationale: incident reports document unusual occurrences and deviations from care. facilities use the internal documents to evaluate care, determine potential risks, or discover system problems that might have contributed to the error. this type of error wont result in a report to the state board of nursing or in the nurses suspension. some facilities do track the number of errors a nurse or a particular unit makes; the purpose of tracking errors is to provide appropriate education and to improve the nursing process.client needs category: safe, effective care environmentclient needs subcategory: management of carecognitive level: analysisreference: craven, r.f., and hirnle, c.j. fundamentals of nursing: human health and function, 5th ed. philadelphia: lippincott williams & wilkins, 2007, p. 566.
