There are different types of nurses. Many people think of one thing when they think of nurses – they think they give shots and medication. However, different nurses do different things. For example, one of those nurses is called a scrub nurse. She or he will not administer shots or medication to patients. Instead, he or she will hand over surgical instruments to the surgeon during the surgery.
If a surgeon asks for a scalpel, then the scrub nurse will hand over the correct utensil. The scrub nurse would have to be able to quickly identify and recognize these instruments with ease. The nurse would have to go to school to learn all of these different instruments for their job. Then they would apply what they learned to their job.
The scrub nurse assists the surgeon by providing appropriate surgical instruments and supplies, maintaining strict surgical asepsis and, with the circulating nurse, accounting for all gauze sponges, needles, and instruments. The circulating nurse assists the surgeon and scrub nurse, positions the client, assists with gowning and gloving, applies appropriate equipment and surgical drapes, and provides the surgeon and scrub nurse with supplies.
