An EtherChannel is a link between the switch and a server. It is good to have an EtherChannel because it provides more bandwidth compared to other servers. It uses up to eight ports for its bandwidth. However, there are limitations to the EtherChannel. The same switch must be used for all the ports. There are three main components to the EtherChannel including the Ethernet links, compatible hardware and configuration.

There is a relation between the load balancing between the ports and the number of ports in the EtherChannel. For 2 ports, the load balancing ratio is four to four. For the one that has five ports, it is 2 to 2 to 2 to one to one. The physical links are two, five and eight.
