The Crucible is a play about a major historical event. This event was the Salem witch trials. These trials were actually a wrongdoing in history. Young girls made claims that certain women in the town were witches. The other adults actually believed these young girls who dramatically explained how these women were witches.

This play is based on this historical event and not exactly what happened in history. Dramatic events were added that did not happen. One character in the play is John Proctor. This is the protagonist. His wife is Elizabeth. Elizabeth is one of those adults who was accused of witchcraft.

However, she is pregnant and her husband makes a statement, “My wife will never die for me?” This refers to the fact that he knows that his adultery has caused her to be arrested.
