Where the Red Fern Grows is a children's novel that was published in 1961 and was written by Wilson Rawls. The book is about the story of a boy that wants two Redbone Coonhounds but his family is too poor to get them and offers to get him a mongrel instead. The boy does odd jobs to save up his money and buys the dogs himself.
The boy cares for his pair of coonhounds, trains them and loves them. However tragedy strikes when he is out with them and they are attacked by a mountain lion. He tries to save his dogs but the actaully end up saving him and his male dog must give his life in the process.
