True-for those diagnosed with cancer, good nutrition is important to assist the body before, during and after cancer treatment to optimise recovery and quality of life. however, cancer can change the way the body utilises food and nutrients, reducing the amounts absorbed by our bodies. additionally, the body needs extra nutrients to help heal wounds, fight infection, and recover from surgery. when the body does not get or cannot absorb the nutrients it needs for good health, malnutrition can result. this can make it very hard for the patient to get through their cancer treatment.many side effects of cancer treatments can adversely affect nutritional status. these include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, taste changes, dry mouth, mouth sores, difficulty chewing/ swallowing, pain and depression, among others. the combination of these symptoms often causes reduced food and nutrient intake resulting in loss of weight, loss of muscle stores and general weakness.
