Her mother had 18 pregnancies and died at 45 because of tb and cervical cancer. She also worked as a nnurse and saw many women die because they tried to do abortions. Sawyer decided to open up the first birth control clinic in ny. Contraception was illegal so she was arrested and put on trial. She believed that women should be able to determine when to have children. The courtcase was highly publicized and she got a lot of publicity and support from it. The case was eventually overruled, and sawyer used all of her support and donations to open up more clinics. She also founded the american birth control league (later renamed to planned parenthood). She was however also associated with the eugenics movement.
