The sinoatrial node stimulates the heart. This is what starts the heartbeat. However, the other things listed in the answers also have a part in getting the heart to beat. The previous answer has the correct order of the steps for getting the heart to beat. I’ll focus on what the sinoatrial node does. This node is also called the SA Node. It sends an electrical pulse. This pulse is directed at the right atrium of the heart. This is the first part of the heart to contract, sending the blood next door into the left atrium.

Depending on what medications you take and how often you exercise, your heart could beat faster at rest than someone else’s or it could be as fast as someone else’s during rest while you’re exercising.
