Purgatory is a belief that comes from the religious faith of Christianity. Not all Christians believe it, but those that do feel it is the final resting place for people who had grace when they died. Though they had grace, they lacked having a love for Jesus.
Those that believe feel there are different levels to Purgatory, going for low to high. The lowest level is closer to hell, the second level is in the middle, and the highest level is closer to Heaven. This idea is meant to influence people to grow a relationship with God and the faith before leaving Earth.
Purgatory is a belief of some Christians. Not all believe them, but the ones that do have a strong opinion about it. Purgatory is thought to be a place for those that died with grace but didn't die with having a love for Jesus. Protestants don't believe in this belief at all.
Other Western Christianity cultures do believe it, but they see the place as being filled with fire. Catholics call it an after-death purification. They even have a doctrine that defines it. In this doctrine, it teaches that after death, some souls are purified. It also teaches that these souls benefit from prayers.
