There are two main reasons why fast food is so affordable. First, the food is cheap to buy and is bought in bulk. When items are bought in bulk, they can be bought from the manufacturer by the fast food restaurant for much cheaper than what is in the grocery stores. The food is prepared in a cheap fashion. Frying food is much less time-consuming for the workers than grilling or baking.
Diet foods are typically more expensive than unhealthy options. A candy bar is filling and cheaper than another diet food is. Second, fast food restaurants typically serve the same meals. They know exactly how much to buy and how much to charge. The prices stay relatively the same.
