A hypothesis is an educated guess. It’s often phrased as an “if...then…” question. Common ones include “if I drop this penny in the vinegar, then the gunk will be cleaned off” and “if I add soap to the water, then the water will have less surface tension”. These are two experiments often done in middle school science classrooms. As one progresses in science, the “if...then…” statement is still acceptable, but it can be played with a little more. It’s one of those things that would go well under learning to walk before you run.
Once you have a hypothesis, you can start setting up an experiment to test it. The hypothesis is usually inspired by something you’ve seen in nature or by a prompt in a science classroom.
