This varies from place to place. Along the east coast of the United States, for example, sunset in the winter of 2017 has been around 5:30 in the evening. This is nice for those that have a longer commute; they can see at least some of the beauty of the sunsets that have happened so far in 2017’s winter. For those in a place like Australia, the sun will be setting later since it is technically summer down in Australia. The time will get progressively later as the seasons begin to change, with the shortest day of the year - the winter solstice - hitting on December 4th in 2017.

The sun sets earlier in the winter than in the spring in the United States for a couple of different reasons. One is daylight savings time, since it causes everything to fall back an hour.
