RSVP is a French phrase which means “Repondez, s’il vous plait”. In English, it is translated as “Please reply.” RSVP is used when sending out an invitation. If you received an invitation or a letter and see the word RSVP, it just means that the sender of the invitation or the letter wants you to answer whether or not you accept his or her invitation.
Here are some examples when RSVP are used: In a wedding and birthday invitation which sometimes contain a response card that you can mail back to the sender or a telephone number which you can contact to give out your response. Nowadays, however, invitations commonly carry the notation “regrets only” which just means that the sender is expecting your presence unless you inform him or her otherwise.
