In the novel, "The Crucible," the characters Putnam and Proctor debate over the proper ownership of a parcel of timberland where Proctor harvests his wood for lumber. Putnam asserts that his grandfather bequeathed the tract of land to Putnam in his will.

Proctor says that he procured the land from Francis Nurse, adding that Putman's grandfather had a routine of willing land that did not belong to him. They argue over the proper ownership of a piece of timberland where Proctor harvests his lumber. Putnam threatens to save Proctor
