The 2017 Nobel Peace Prize for physiology and medicine went to three different American scientist that studied circadian rhythms. These scientists were Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash, and Michael W. Young. The trio studied molecular mechanisms in fruit flies and were able to isolate a gene that controls circadian rhythms.
Fruit flies have a very similar biological clock system as humans so it was very easy to collect the data about the fruit flies and then happy that same data to human beings. Furthering our studies on this subject could be quite helpful to a lot of people that suffer from sleeping issues.
