Where the Wild Things Are is a 1963 Children’s book written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak. Sendak won the annual Caldecott Medal from the children’s librarians in 1964. Even years later in 2012 the book was voted as the number one picture book through a survey of School Library Journal readers. Over the years the book has been adapted other areas of media in several ways.
This includes an animated short film in 1974, an Opera in 1980, and perhaps the most popular a live action feature film in 2009 that was directed by Spike Jonze. The book has sold over 19 million copies worldwide just since 2009 when the film premiered.
