The Wapshot Chronicle is the debut novel of John Cheever. The book was published in 1957 and centers around an eccentric family that lives in a Massachusetts fishing village. The Wapshot Chronicle won the 1958 US Book Award for Fiction. The book was grounding breaking in a few ways, for one the main character experiences feelings of bisexuality.
This is speculated to have perhaps been autobiographical for Cheever who was bisexual himself. The book was also the first novel selected by the Book of the Month club to include the word ‘fucks’ in it. The Wapshot Chronicle is actually ranked number 63rd on 100 best English language novels of the 20th century.
