Toni Morrison wrote the book “Beloved”, which came out in 1987. The book is set after the American civil War, and was inspired by an escaped slave on her journey to the state of Ohio from Kentucky, where she was a slave. Despite that, the book opens with an introduction to a ghost, the daughter of the escaped slave in the book. The child haunts the mother’s home, presumably because she sold her child instead of letting her go back to that horrible plantation she had escaped.
The book has a lot of imagery that has to do with the emotional and physical traumas of slavery. The book focuses on trying to forget the past and repress the memories of what has happened to them.
