“Invisible Man” was written by Ralph Ellison. This 1952 novel takes the idea of the laws of the time and uses them to render his main character “invisible”, hence the title. Since the book came out around the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement (before it was officially called that), it also looks at how African-Americans in the time period are invisible because of the laws of the land, and how Black Nationalism at the time was trying to change that.
The novel has been ranked among some of the best novels of the 20th century. “Time” magazine ranked it 19th on its list of best novels written between 1923 and 2005. It’s on the list of best novels of the 20th century, period, and even former-US President Barack Obama likes the novel.
