Pesto is a sauce which originated in Genoa, Italy. It is consisted of different crushed ingredients such as garlic, pine nuts, basil leaves, coarse salt, parmesan cheese, and pecorino sardo and then blended with olive oil. It is derived from the Italian word pestare which means to crush or to pound – hence, all ingredients are finely crushed and mixed all together.
Here are some of the following recipes which call for the use of pesto: Pesto pizza, meatballs in pesto cream, pesto fritters, pesto corn, pesto sweet potatoes, ricotta-broccoli pasta, pesto cream tortellini, potato pesto pasta, calamari pesto pasta, pesto green beans, pesto egg salad, pesto and tomato soup, pesto beans, and pesto salmon cakes. These recipes can be altered from your own taste; hence pesto is not really a required ingredient unless you are planning to make a pesto pasta.
