The following are some of the foods that can cause heartburn (ingredients commonly found in Mexican dishes): 1) Tomatoes – although tomatoes contain lycopene, it is also highly acidic and most likely to cause heartburn, 2) Garlic and onion – because some people don’t really do well with either onion or garlic, 3) Spicy foods – some Mexican foods are spicy because they are loaded with pepper which can trigger heartburn, and 4) Cheese and avocadoes – these two can also trigger heartburn because fat slows down the emptying of our stomach and can therefore put pressure on the esophageal sphincter.
