Born Herbert Eugene Caen on April 03, 1916 in Sacramento, California, he was best known as Herb Caen, a San Francisco journalist who published different gossip, social and political happenings and anecdotes in the San Francisco Chronicle for more or less than sixty years. He died on February 01, 1997 at the age of 80 in San Francisco, California from lung cancer.
It was in May 1996 when he revealed to his readers that he had lung cancer. It was said that he smoked for about forty years, but already quit his vice 25 years before his death. San Francisco proclaimed June 14,1996 as Herb Caen Day as he was honored by “a pantheon of the city’s movers, shakers, celebrities and historical figures.”
