One of the most popular dishes in Italy is a dish called pizza margherita. This more closely resembles something like a baked pita bread than pizza as we know and love it in America. However, it has a lot of the same ingredients as our favorite pizzas. It involves a baked crust, mozzarella cheese, and tomatoes - both some kind of tomato based sauce and actual tomato slices. There’s fresh basil on top, along with fresh garlic and fresh black pepper, usually ground and added to the eater’s tastes.
The pizza margherita is not an alcoholic dish, despite the use of the word “margherita” in the name. It’s simply an ancient Italian dish that has survived to the modern day Italy and beyond.
