Yes, while different things are considered gifts now than in history, gift giving has been a common social norm among all human cultures. As individuals, we are social animals who appreciate each other's conversation and communicating our sentiments through the giving of gifts or blessings.
Regardless of whether it is a declaration of genuine romance, some words of encouragement or just to demonstrate our appreciation for having somebody as a companion, the giving of gifts is engrained into our DNA. Where now we give gifts such as money, new technology or vacations, in the past we have given gifts such as stories and helping with daily chores.
