After a storm passes the level of a tropical storm, a hurricane develops. There are 5 types of hurricanes. A category 1 hurricane has winds from 74-95 mph. No real damage to buildings and some coastal flooding and minor pier damage. A category 2 hurricane has winds from 96-110 mph. There is some damage to building roofs, doors and windows. A category 3 hurricane has winds from 111-130 mph. There is some structural damage to small residences and utility buildings and large trees are blown down.
A category 4 hurricane has winds from 131-155 mph. There are more extensive curtain wall failures with some complete roof structure failure on small residences. A category 5 hurricane has winds from 156 mph and up. There is complete roof failure on many residences and industrial buildings with major flooding.
