Born Joseph Michael Arpaio on June 14, 1932 in Springfield, Massachusetts, Joe Arpaio was the 36th Sherriff of Maricopa County and held the position from January 01, 1993 to January 01, 2017. During his tenure he was accused of many things and among of those are police misconduct, failure to investigate sex crimes in his area, violations of election law, and unlawful enforcement of immigration laws. It was in October 2016 when he was charged with criminal contempt-of-court for failure to follow the judge’s orders to end his immigration patrols in Arizona.
It was on July 31, 2017 when he was found guilty of the charge and U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton wrote that he “willfully violated an order of the court [by failing] to ensure his subordinates’ compliance and by directing them to continue to detain persons for whom no criminal charges could be filed.” He was supposed to be sentenced this month (October), but President Trump pardoned him last August 25, 2017.
