Verbs are action words. There are many kinds of verbs, for example the words “going,” “doing,” “jumping,” and “dancing” are all verbs. Often, they end in “-ing” or “-ed” when in the present or past tense. That’s the funky thing about English; there are so many rules. That said, a word like “run” is said “I ran,” “I am running,” and “I will run” for the three tenses. It doesn’t follow the “-ed” ending, but it is a verb all the same.
There are also “helping verbs,” which includes words like “to” and the phrase “to be.” Examples include “you are running,” “you are jumping,” “you can be…” and “to go or not to go?” The rest of the rules around verbs get too technical for fifth grade.
