Chocolate is a food that we eat today as candy bars, candy and syrup. However, during history, even ancient history, chocolate was a drink. The first civilization, the Olmecs, drank chocolate. There are evidence of this at their site. Although, it was believed that chocolate existed prior to the Olmecs. Cacao beans existed during this time and chocolate is made from cacao beans.

Most likely the chocolate was not sweet, so it may not have the same taste as it does today. Even though there is proof that earlier civilizations drank chocolate, the Mayans are given credit with inventing chocolate. They recorded their history and documented their chocolate consumption. The Aztecs and other civilizations in Mesoamerica drank chocolate. Later, it became a drink for the wealthy.
