Sammi is on first. Deena kicks a fly ball to center. The ball hits Nicole, the outfielder in the head and bounces high into the air. Sammi, while standing on first, sees Nicole get HIT in the head and thinks that the ball will drop safely and begins to run. Jenni was backing up Nicole and catches the ball and hurls it back to the pitcher. Sammi never comes back to first and stays at second. The pitcher tells the ref he wants to appeal the tag up and throws the ball to the first baseman before the next pitch is thrown. The first baseman touches first.

Sammi is safe because she did tag up.-the appeal here was done properly. at any time at the end of the play before the next play, a team can appeal by having a fielder step on the base with the ball. the ref should only then make a call about whether or not the runner tagged up. the same appeal process can be done if a team thinks a player missed a base. the team does not have to wait for a dead ball to attempt an appeal. in this case, sammi tagged up because we judge tagging up on first contact, not when the catch is completed.
