Are Sanchez and Carl safe or out?

Are Sanchez and Carl safe or out?

Change Image    Delete

Sanchez is on first, Carl is kicking. Carl hits a pop-up to the first baseman. Sanchez never runs because she thinks the ball will be caught. The first baseman lets the ball drop and then touches it for the first time. The first baseman touches first base and then touches Sanchez with the ball. Subsequently Carl touches first base.

Carl is out but Sanchez is safe.

A play you may see as a ref this season is the intentional drop to get the double play. In this situation, the fielder lets a ball drop, touches the runner and then the bag. It must be done in this order unless the runner leaves the bag. Here, Sanchez stayed on first base. Arunner loses the right to a base if another player is forced to run to that base. Here, as soon as the ball was kicked, Sanchez lost her right to it. However, as soon as the first baseman touched the base, there was no more force and sanchez reacquired the right to occupy the base and she therefore could not be tagged out as long as she stayed on the base.
