Toms of Maine is a company that sells products that pertain to personal care. Some of their products include toothpaste. So, it would seem sensible that if this company would be bought out it would be bought out by another toothpaste company. In this case, Colgate bought them out. Toms of Maine was founded in 1970 by Tom and Kate Chappell. Their headquarters is located in Kennebunk, Maine.

Besides toothpaste, Toms of Maine also makes deodorants, mouthwashes and soaps. In 2006, Colgate contacted the Chappells to see if they wanted to sell their company. They sold 84% of the company to Colgate who paid about one hundred million dollars for it. The remainder is still owned by the original owners.
