The most common coat type for domestic house cats is tabby. This coat type refers to any cat that has distinctive stripes, dots, lines, or swirling patterns in their hair. Tabbys are often confused as being a cat breed but in reality many different breeds of cats can be tabbys as it is a type of hair instead of an actual cat breed.
Usually a distinction of Tabby cats is a marking on the forehead that comes together to look like an M. The tabby coloring is a direct result of a trait handed down from the African Wildcat, an ancestor of the common housecat.
