In the practices and beliefs of the Catholic Church, there are seven sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation or Chrismation, Eucharist, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony. Sacraments are visible rites that are seen as signs of the grace of God to those who are able to receive them within the proper practices and performances. Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist are all sacraments of initiation, which are considered to be the establishing foundation of Christian life, where members are born by Baptism, strengthened by Confirmation and nourished by Eucharist.
Penance and Anointing of the Sick are sacraments of healing, either physically or spiritually. The last two sacraments, Holy Orders and Matrimony, are sacraments of service.
