How does Ralph betray Piggy?

Ralph goes out of his way to annoy piggy and goes to tell the other boys Piggy’s nickname, even though piggy had forbidden him to do so. Of course, the boys couldn’t stop laughing at the funny nickname and this made Piggy feel very betrayed. She goes on to confront Ralph about the matter and ask why he did so.

In response, Ralph is confused as to whether he should apologize or simply end the conversation with an insult. He really can’t decide whether he should be as horrid as to insult her further. After all, telling her nickname in school was a big deal.
