The Great Horned Owl dines on skunk, is often mobbed by crows, and has a 57 inch wingspan. They often hunt animals larger than themselves but will also hunt small animals and insects such as mice, frogs, and scorpions.
It is one of the most common owls in North America. They live in deserts, wetlands, forests, backyards, grasslands, and big cities. They can be found anywhere between the Arctic and the Tropics.
They are easily identifiable by their large tufts of fur that stand up on the tips of their ears. They have large talons for hunting and yellow eyes. They are nocturnal and hunt at night. Their large eyes allow them to take in as much light as possible in the dark night sky. They are silent hunters.
