A chinchilla’s rectal body temperature will usually come back between 97 degrees Fahrenheit and 100 degrees Fahrenheit. These are sturdy, robust little creatures. They’ve developed a habit of hiding any kind of illnesses well enough that predators don’t see them. Therefore, chinchilla owners must remember to examine and even weigh a chinchilla weekly. Weighing a chinchilla can be a particularly insightful move because they will start to lose weight if they are feeling sick because they’re not eating.
Examining their eyes, however, is the best place to start. These are the first places that will start to show symptoms of illness. Another place to look at if you suspect your chinchilla is hiding an illness from you is to look at its fur. It’ll feel dry and look duller than a healthy chinchilla’s fur.
