The word “turtle” translates to “tortuga” in Spanish. It is the name of a Haitian island, and is used as a reference to a safe haven for pirates from the British privateers, the West Indies, and everyone else who is generally ticked at them in the Disney franchise “Pirates of the Caribbean”. There are other islands named “Tortuga” as well in modern life, from an uninhabited island in Venezuela to a small group of islands in the Florida Keys.
Non-land uses of the word include a non-alcoholic cocktail called the tortuga and an island in the game Assassin's Creed. The name is also used as the title of a book by Rudolfo Anaya, which came out in 1979. It’s also a software used to simulate events.
