Asia is a large continent that spans many miles. However, one ocean lies directly south to parts of Asia. This ocean is the Indian Ocean. The Atlantic and Pacific Oceans are larger than the Indian Ocean. It covers over 27 million miles. Below the Indian Ocean is another ocean, the Southern Ocean. The Indian Ocean was named from the country when it was considered to be a subcontinent.
Many countries that border this ocean established ports. These ports helped create large cities on the coast and allow for easy transportation. There are several gulfs, bays and seas that dump into the ocean. A few of them are the Red Sea, Arabian Sea, Gulf of Carpentaria, Persian Gulf and Bay of Bengal.
