Native Americans lived in what is now the United States. Before explorers came over to settle and make claims of the United States, there were many tribes already living there. The Sioux tribe lived in the area of Minnesota and Iowa in the 1800s and 1900s. The Sioux tribe has different sections including the Dakota, Lakota and Nakota. Sitting Bull is a famous chief of the Sioux tribe.
He is known for standing up against the U.S. government which supported his name. He was eventually killed by an agency of the government. Today, there are reservations for the Sioux tribe still in existence. Most recently, the Dakota tribe with many other activists have protested the Dakota Access oil pipeline in 2016.
